Magrath Atelier at Gage Academy of Art

The Magrath Sculpture Atelier is a multi-year, part-time Atelier designed to confer the core disciplines needed to become a practicing figurative sculptor.

Led by celebrated sculptor Michael Magrath, students learn to become adept in both traditional approaches as well as contemporary concerns in a variety of media. Build cumulatively upon the core skills of drawing and modeling from life, while adding critical understanding of anatomy, composition in the round and relief as well as technical skills such as mold making, casting, basic fabrication and subtractive techniques in wood, stone, metal and composite materials.

The full series is designed to be undertaken over three years, but may be taken part-time over several years, and culminates in a year of independent study and the production of a final, significant project.

Intended to dovetail with the ongoing Foundation program, aspiring part-time Atelier students are encouraged to add Foundation Figure Sculpture I at a discounted rate for a fully immersive experience. Other concurrent or discounted programs include Écorché programs, guest lectures and professional development events.

Artists and Critics Call for Art Strike on Inauguration Day | artnet News

Magrath Sculpture Atelier will not meet on Fri, Jan 20. I invite all of my students, and others following this page, to join in the Art Strike or take other creative action instead. Artists and critics call for a day of "no work, no school, no business" on the day that Donald J. Trump assumes the American Presidency.

Check out the awesome progress on these bones!

Using drawings/sketches to build up armature and start blocking the figure.

First year students have moved from peppers to bones... and are quickly becoming masters of plaster.

The dual track continues... the life sculpting group is refining their figures, and pepper group is in the process of destroying their work to create it anew.

Our third year students are drawing from the model, then using the drawings as references for sculpting. First year students are sculpting peppers - anyone remember that from two years ago?!
