Puget Sound Community School

Turning Passion into Achievement.

Puget Sound Community School is a small, independent, middle and high school, centrally located in Seattle's International District. At PSCS, our first focus is not limited to an academic program; our focus is on the full range of human development. We provide a safe, loving, nurturing environment where the curriculum is responsibility and the goal for our graduates is maturity. We surround students with talented people of high character who help them find out what they’re passionate about, and then help them DO something with that passion.

We believe that people become empowered by being free to pursue the knowledge they want to possess, by learning how to ask significant questions, and by structuring their time and activities as they best see fit. In this way, PSCS promotes the development of critical and creative thinking in students and helps them strengthen their sense of authority over what they study.

Students work each year with an advisor to identify their short- and long-term goals, and to plan for what they want to accomplish and how. Classes and activities are offered in response to direct student requests, or because a staff member or community volunteer has identified a significant topic they want to share. Students also participate in regular community service projects and field trips, and most complete multiple independent study projects during their time at PSCS. All of the traditional academic subjects are covered through this approach, which also helps students understand and work with their own internal rhythm and speed.

As a community orgaizer, it is easy to ask and act on behalf...

Angels on earth: Amazing stories of people helping each other

PSCS co-founder Andy Smallman has a story featured in a new book by bestselling author Laura Schroff (An Invisible Thread). It's out now and the press behind it is pretty awesome!

"The chapter about us explains how [PSCS alum] Johnny Spangler helped inspire my first kindness class. To this day, he helps me promote kindness."

Read more at kindnessandy.com and check out the author discussing her book on the Today Show (#hihoda! Hoda Kotb!):

today.com Laura Schroff is co-author of "Angels on Earth," which features inspiring true stories of connections that changed lives. Psychologist Dr. Dale Atkins joins her on TODAY to share remarkable examples of how simple actions can change people's lives as well as providing a “helper’s high.”
