There are some children whose ability, passion, and curiosity are simply too big for traditional schools. They need a community of learners like them, plus brilliant, tireless teachers who truly understand them and find joy in teaching them.
These students do their best learning in a place where rigorous academics are just the starting point—where the day is often shaped by the questions they ask, and where a lesson plan is, by design, more roadmap than agenda.
Such students thrive in a place where they will internalize forever the understanding that having your own ideas and using them to solve complex problems is just as important as simply knowing the right answer. A place that gently reminds them every day: You belong. And the world needs your gifts.
For some, Seattle Country Day School is that place.
As one of our students put it: “I feel like a puzzle piece that finally found the right box.”
This week, SCDS students across all grades learned that the goal of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only to remember the remarkable man and all he contributed to our country. The observance of this national holiday reminds us to be of service in our communities. "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" --Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Enjoy the long weekend and consider finding a family service opportunity near you! Other ideas include: writing Valentines to the elderly at a nearby nursing home, donating food at a local food bank, or picking up trash at a park or beach that you love.

SCDS 5th graders had the opportunity to learn from former SCDS teacher and author Mark Holtzen as part of the Voices III program yesterday, January 4, 2017.
He discussed the concept of perfection; read an excerpt from a book-in-progress, asking the students to critique him; and he concluded by answering questions from SCDS Librarian, Ms. Pearson about his inspiration and how to overcome getting 'stuck'.
"Human interaction inspires me," Mr. Holtzen shared. "A book has to have a soul and when you read something, you instinctively know if it is there or not."
