We just received this photo of three members of the kaizen promotion office team at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (Sath Chatterbox) receiving the Twiddlemuffs that our sensei Melissa Lin delivered from our team last week. Pictured here are Richard Stephens, Melissa Lin, Cathy Smith and Yvonne Herbert. Thank you for sending us the lovely photos and letting us be a part of your team's efforts to improve dementia awareness and patient experience!

Members of our Gives Back team, and their neighbors and friends, worked on their lunch breaks, evenings and weekends to create these beautiful Twiddlemuffs for patients with dementia. Each of these soft knitted muffs contains objects — such as buttons, jewelry and knitted knobs — on the inside and outside for patients to grasp and focus on when they find themselves in unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations. We thank the staff members and volunteers at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (Sath Chatterbox), in Shropshire, England, for inspiring us and showing us such a wonderful way they improve the patient experience for so many.

Why doctors are leery about seeking mental health care for themselves

washingtonpost.com

Here's an article in the Washington Post that's worth reading. The author, a physician who practices at Stanford University School of Medicine, addresses the difficulties physicians face in exploring mental health issues and calls for a change to improve employee engagement and patient care. Our faculty member Henry Otero, MD, comments: "'Physician, heal thyself.' These words define the physician culture of secrecy and self-reliance that can manifest in the behaviors of not asking for help or seeking treatment for issues surrounding mental illness. The professional culture which sees mental illness as weakness, coupled with our own inabilities to recognize and offer assistance, contributes to the current state. The road forward requires removing the barriers perceived in reporting and recognizing the benefits for our colleagues and our patients when physicians and other professionals are functioning at their best. We need to reembrace our defining oath, 'first do no harm.'"
