Anatomy Drawing at Seattle Central

Where the rubber meets the road...artists explore their own anatomy!

A teaching artist explores the connections between anatomy, figurative representation, and contemporary approaches to creating images of the self. I share lessons, links, videos, pictures of my art, art that inspires me and my student's works too.

Draw accurate bones and muscle

Try drawing the bones and muscles of the humn body and it will improve your figure drawings like crazy. Here is a quick tutorial! Make better art by understanding the human skeleton and mastering muscle structure.

VIDEO: Learning to Blend Colored Pencil

Check out this free tutorial on how to blend with your colored pencils! Whenever we hear the phrase, “practice makes perfect,” most of us probably think of sports or music - but it’s also very important in art. In today's video clip, Janie Gildow demonstrates

One week into 2017 and I'm already stalling on some of my new year resolutions. Thank you Simone de Beauvoir for perspective:

"Art and science do not establish themselves despite failure but through it; which does not prevent there being truths and errors, masterpieces and lemons...." Guess I've gotta make some lemonade!

How I love to paint! I just listened to The Savvy Painter podcast's interview with Carin Canier, and she's so open about the soulful urge to create pictures! I'm definitely a fan of her work which mixes collaged pictures with oainted passages.

An artist whose work I just saw in DC and who blows my mind is Mickalene Thomas. I love how she blends high art with common techniques like collage and craft materials like glitter.

Happy New Year everyone! Did you think I dropped off the face of the earth? Nah, just took a vacation. Now I'm ready for 2017. First thing tomorrow...a new academic term begins! I am hoping to FB Live at least once a week in 2017, showcasing a new technique or awesome new talents I work with. SO stay tuned!

Right around the corner...yeah, another show. This one is curated by the amazing Blanca Santander, an incredible artist in her own right. I'm showing paintings, y'all!

Quintessential Seattle, because no matter where you roam, there's no place like home. Blast from the past, Epic 142, an ink and marker on Mylar self-portrait. Yeehaw!

Thank you to Seattle Art Museum for the free tickets they issued my painting students this term. We had an amazing experience studying painting techniques and chromatic schemes directly from the canvases of Old, Modern, and Contemporary Masters. My painters this term were exceptionally inspired by the visit. Here are some examples of their work this last crit.
